Paid Student Research Opportunities: Summer 2005 and during 2005/06 academic year: The Colorado College State of the Rockies Project

The CC Rockies Project has funding for several students from different majors and disciplines to work as a team with faculty, a recent graduate (Caitlin O’Brady, EV Major class of 2005), and the EV Technical Director (Matt Reuer) on topics that will be major components of the April 2006 Rockies Report Card and Conference.  These research students, working individually and in teams, will be expected do background research, collect data, engage in analysis using statistics and GIS programs (with appropriate help and “on-the-job” learning of these skills), and write drafts of the topics chosen for Summer 2005 analysis.  Potential topics for Summer 2005 (to be used in the April 2006 Rockies Report Card and Conference):

  • Ranches and agriculture as a source of product and land protection

  • Conservation easements and land trusts as 21st century protectors of natural diversity

  • New communities in the Rockies: exurbanites, second-homes, retirement villages, and co-housing communities

  • The militarized Rockies: defense installations and expenditures

  • Education of Rockies youth: grading the Rockies schools and campuses

  • Threatened and endangered species: real and political risks in the Rockies

Successful applicants will be:

  • Sophomores or juniors by May 2005

  • Possess a strong academic record as shown on a transcript copy

  • Have a declared major in the sciences or social sciences/humanities that can contribute to Rockies research

  • Be able to demonstrate interest/involvement in the 8-state Rockies region (included in a resume and cover letter)

  • Obtain a strong letter of recommendation from a CC faculty member.

Having taken a course in statistics and/or introductory knowledge of GIS tools is a plus.  Preference may be given to students who can build upon this Summer 2005 work as they complete a senior year capstone project or thesis.  The student-faculty team will be based at Colorado College for approximately 10 weeks during Summer 2005 and there will be field work/travel to pertinent parts of the Rockies.  Opportunities will exist to continue paid involvement in the Rockies Project during the 2005/2006 academic year; preference again may be given to those structuring a senior thesis or project around a Rockies topic.  Student team members will not be enrolled as CC students during Summer 2005 and thus will need to find off-campus housing (many inexpensive summer sub-lets are always available); summer pay will be in the range of $360 per week.
