The Colorado College Collegium Musicum

The Collegium Musicum is dedicated to the performance of works from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Early Baroque periods. Composed of 18 singers and 6 instruments, the Collegium is the only ensemble of its kind in Colorado Springs.


The Instruments of the Collegium



The Recorder

The recorder is a duct flute, meaning it has a whistle-like mouthpiece. It has a cylindrical bore, seven finger holes and a thumb hole.



The Crumhorn

The crumhorn is a double reeded instrument with a cylindrical bore. Its name comes from the German krumhorn meaning "curved horn".

The Viola da Gamba

The viola da gamba is a fretted string instrument, similar to both the modern guitar and cello. The viola da gamba is bowed while held between the legs; its name literally means "leg viol".

The Sacbut

The sacbut is a Renaissance trombone. It features a smaller bore and is less flated than the modern trombone. The sacbut's name translates to "push-pull".



Percussion

The typical percussion section features the drum, the tambourine, and the finger cymbals.
