Each size is used for a different type of score:

| 6 | Small Middle | Chorals. Condensed Sheet Music |
| 7 | Cadenza | Pocket editons, Cue lines in piano scores |
| 8 | Pearl | Thematic Advertisment |
Staff Sizes 3, 4, 5 and 6 are the most commonly used. Sizes 1 and 2 are rarely used, and Size 8 is even less common.
