Getting films

TIGER Catalog
Search by WORD Search and the term "videorecording" or change Material Type to "Videos". If you want only DVDs or Laser Disks, use the term "DVD" or the term "Laser Disk".

Prospector
Search by WORD Search and the term "videorecording". Some Prospector libraries will lend videos, some won't.

WorldCat
Search by Keyword and limit type to: "Visual Materials". Most WorldCat libraries will not lend videos but some might.

Pikes Peak Library District
Search and Change Format to "DVDs or Videocassettes". Log in to 'My Account' and place holds for movies you want to see.

The library orders most of their films from Amazon.com and Facets Multimedia. For other distributors of films, especially documentaries, see Resources for Identifying Documentaries.

To find foreign language films, search with the term "foreign films" and <foreign language>.

American Film Scripts Online -- (CC subscription database) titles range from The Wizard of Oz and Casablanca to Scooby Do and Oceans Eleven

Ebsco Academic Search Premier
Provides both popular magazine, newspaper, and film journal reviews.

Lexis-Nexis
Click on Guided News Search, then Select a News Category and change it to Arts & Sports News and change Select a News Source to "Book, movie, music & play reviews".

Readers Guide Abstracts and Readers Guide Retrospective
Provides reviews in the popular press back to 1890s.

Film Literature Index
only available in paper at 1st Floor North-Ref Index PN1992.93 .F5 1973-, but the best comprehensive source for reviews including critical literature in film journals and "specialized, exotic or fugitive film publications".

Film Review Annual
only available in paper at 1st Floor North-Reference PN1995. F465 1981-, but reprints all important reviews of films released US major markets that year.

Internet Movie Database
Searchable movie database for international films and TV shows produced in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.

Movielens set up a free account, then rank movies according to your likes and dislikes: get reccomended movies, make a wishlist, add comments and more.

Liveplasma
Type in the name of a movie, click on “movie title” and see what other films you might also like in a graphical representation. Might want to show this last, as it just crashed my browser.

Rotten Tomatoes -- review aggregator: search for a movie and see the critical consensus at a glance & link to reviews from all over

Kids-In-Mind -- for parents evaluating the content of a movie for violence (what kind of violence, and exactly how much?) or sex-laden (exactly how explicit?). It gives great detail as to exactly what kind of sexual or violent content a movie has. This is not a critical review site, but is very useful for parents!

Screenit.com is a site which presents interesting background information about the movie and performers as well as a fairly detailed description of content in several areas-violence, sexuality, drug use etc. Great for parents.

Academy Awards -- annual (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) showcase the best in movies and couture

British Academy of Film& Television Awards-- the British equivalent of our Oscar and Emmy awards

Cannes Film Festival -- annual and international, Cannes winners often emerge as the year's most talked-about films

Golden Globe Awards -- honoring excellence in film and television (Hollywood Foreign Press Association)

Independent Spirit Awards -- honoring excellence in independent film
