Displaying Art at Tutt Library: An Invitation
Tutt Library would like to invite Colorado College students, faculty and staff to display their art in the Tutt Library building. We feel that the library is a highly visible and appropriate venue for such exhibits. Below are examples of the types of exhibits that we feel the library can accommodate:
- We cannot offer “traditional” gallery space, but for two-dimensional pieces we can offer hanging space all around the 3rd floor iron balcony, with the art work facing into the library atrium. This is a highly visible area. Another option is the wall space along the “bridge area” on the second floor, which is equipped with metal picture rails for suspending works.
- The library also has two horizontal glass display cabinets that can accommodate small or fragile art works.
- We will host a variety of exhibit types as long as the exhibit does not interfere with quiet study space, impede physical access to library materials, or create a hazard.
Although we wish to heartily extend this invitation, please be aware of the following:
- Since the library is not an art gallery, and library space is freely open to the public (including children), the library reserves the right to decline to display any work that, for various reasons, may be considered objectionable.
- A release form must be signed by the artist releasing the library for liability in the event art works are damaged or stolen while on display.
- The artwork cannot be executed in the library itself, as the building cannot be used as a studio space. Performance art in the library building would probably not be appropriate, but could be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Artists must take full responsibility for setting up and removing the exhibit in a timely manner. Care must be taken when mounting work to prevent damage to the library. Tape cannot be adhered directly to painted drywall surfaces.
- In general, the library will not be able to accept donations of artwork. Artists are responsible for seeing that their work is removed from the library after the show.
- Exhibits can be scheduled to run from one to four Blocks.
- Artists desiring to hold an opening reception at the library must do so in consultation with the library committee.

Final approval or disapproval of the submitted proposal will be decided by a committee consisting of Ivan Gaetz (Library Director), Lisa Lister (Reference Librarian), and Jessy Randall (Curator of Special Collections).
