FYE Central: How to Read a Citation
Citations will look slightly different depending on which style guide (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.) you are using. However, the following examples will give you clues for interpreting citations.
Citation for a book:
Lindstrom, Naomi. Jorge Luis Borges: A Study of the Short Fiction. Boston: Twayne Publishers, 1997.
(The title of the book is in italics or underlined; the citation includes the place of publication, name of publisher, and single year for a date.)
Citation for a journal article:
Murray, Barbara A. “ ‘Transgressing Nature’s Law’: Representations of Women and the Adapted Version of The Tempest.” Literature & History 12:1 (April 2003) 19-41.
(The title of the article is in quotes; the title of the journal is in italics or underlined. The citation includes a volume and/or issue number, usually a month and year, and page numbers.)
Citation for an article in a book:
Crow, Thomas. “Southern boys go to Europe: Rauschenberg, Twombly, and Johns in the 1950s.” In Jasper Johns to Jeff Koons: Four Decades of Art from the Broad Collections, ed. Stephanie Barron and Lynn Zelevansky, 30-55. Los Angeles: Museum of Art, 2001.
(The title of the article is in quotes; the title of the book is in italics or underlined. The citation includes page numbers for the article and publication information for the book.)
