The 2012 State of the Rockies Report Card has been released!
On Monday April 9th, at the first day of the 2012 State of the Rockies Conference, we unveiled this year's Report Card to a full crowd, including Secretary of the Department of the Interior Ken Salazar and the Director of the U.S. Geological Survey Marcia McNutt. Conservation in the West Poll Results released on 1/30/2012
For the second year in a row, the State of the Rockies Project, in conjunction with Lori Weigel, Public Opinion Strategies and Dave Metz, Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz & Associates, has conducted the Conservation in the West Poll. The survey, conducted in six Western States, explores bi-partisan opinions in each state and for the six-state region concerning conservation, environment, energy, the role of government, trade-offs with economies, and citizen priorities. The 2011-12 Rockies Project Speakers Series
During the 2011-12 academic year, the Rockies Project hosted a great series of speakers on the Colorado College campus. The series, titled: The Colorado River Basin: Agenda for Use, Restoration, and Sustainability for the Next Generation, expanded on this year's project focus. Topics of the talks ranged from a discussion on the Law of the River, to a panel covering the implications of climate on the Colorado River Basin in the 21st Century. Importance of Public Lands: Letter from 100+ economists to President Obama
Walt Hecox, the Rockies Project Faculty Director, has served on a Steering Committee to draft content for and solicit signatories for a letter to President Obama at this critical time: deep fiscal dilemmas and an impending national election in 2012 combine to threaten the public lands in the Rockies. Release of this letter to the president, signed by 100+ economists including 3 Nobel laureates, half located in the American West, seeks to inform public debate at this critical time.

of the issues that affect our beautiful yet fragile region. |
Down the Colorado Expedition
August 16th, 2012- Tomorrow our Rockies Project Down the Colorado Expedition will launch onto Lake Powell using a craft vastly different from the multitude of houseboats and powerboats that frequent the lake. With the help of Jack's Plastic Welding of Aztec, New Mexico, our explorers will be setting out on a solar raft! Powered by 4 solar panels atop the raft, the expedition will motor across the lake using nothing but energy from the sun. With a maximum capacity of 6hp, the electric motor will be a stark contrast to the enormous house boats motoring across the lake. We just hope that sun, cloud cover, and wind cooperate with our researchers throughout the journey! This is the start of the second half of the expedition after our researchers spent 45 days floating from the headwaters of the Colorado River in Rocky Mountain National Park to Hite, UT. From Lake Powell the expedition will continue down into the Grand Canyon and the Lower Basin of the Colorado River. The expedition focuses on creating a robust geographical database of ecological quality and stakeholder input, with the help of two additional conservation organizations. The 2012-13 State of the Rockies Project: Water Friendly Futures for the Colorado River Basin
Following on the successes of last year's Project and the 2012 State of the Rockies Report Card: The Colorado River Basin- Agenda for Use, Restoration, and Sustainability for the Next Generation, the Project is now well underway in its research for this year's focus: Water Friendly Futures for the Colorado River Basin. We have put together a great team of summer researchers and are excited to expand on last year's work. Here's our prospectus for the 2012-13 Rockies Project.
Secretary of the Department of the Interior Ken Salazar recognized as Champion of the RockiesU.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar was named the 2012 Champion of the Rockies at Colorado College’s ninth annual State of the Rockies Conference. Salazar was presented the award on Monday, April 9 by Walt Hecox, faculty director of CC's State of the Rockies Project.
Previous recipients include environmentalist and philanthropist Ted Turner; Ed and Betsy Marston, the former publisher and editor, respectively, of the High Country News in Paonia, Colo.; and author and conservationist Terry Tempest Williams. |
The Champion of the Rockies Award was initiated in 2007 to honor leaders of vision, drive and determination whose efforts are positively shaping the Rocky Mountain region’s present and future. As Secretary of the Interior, Salazar is in charge of the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, the United States Geological Survey, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and other federal agencies overseen by the Interior Department.
